Lesson 5: What Happens When I Sin After I'm Saved?
Foundational Study for New Believers – S.T.A.D Digital Ministry
www.staddigitalministry.com
Key Scripture:
1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Introduction:
You’ve surrendered your life to Christ, but you’ve just messed up. You feel ashamed, maybe even scared.
Does that mean you’re not saved anymore?
Absolutely not.
Being born again doesn’t mean you’ll never sin again. It means your identity has changed—you are now a child of God. And like any good Father, God disciplines and restores His children, not abandons them.
Do Christians Still Sin?
Yes. Even the apostle Paul wrote about his struggle:
Romans 7:19 – “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”
When you were saved, your spirit was made new, but your flesh (your old sinful nature) still tries to rule.
The Christian life is a journey of growing victory, not instant perfection.
So What Do I Do When I Sin?
1. Don’t Hide – Come to God
Adam and Eve hid when they sinned. We do too.
But God invites us to run to Him, not from Him.
Hebrews 4:16 – “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…”
2. Confess and Repent
Confession is agreeing with God that you sinned.
Repentance is turning away from sin and turning back to Him.
Acts 3:19 – “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out…”
3. Receive His Forgiveness
Don’t punish yourself. Jesus already took your punishment.
Your forgiveness is secure in Christ.
Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
4. Learn and Grow
Ask: What led me into that sin?
Grow stronger through prayer, Scripture, and accountability.
Does Sin Break My Salvation?
Not if you are truly born again.
Salvation is based on God’s grace, not your performance.
Ephesians 2:8–9 – “For it is by grace you have been saved… not by works…”
However, sin can damage your fellowship with God. It doesn’t remove your sonship, but it blocks your closeness with the Father—until you come back.
Assurance of Salvation
Romans 8:1 – “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
If you’ve truly placed your trust in Christ, He holds you secure. Even when you fall, He lifts you up again.
Reflection Questions:
How do you usually respond when you’ve sinned?
Do you believe God truly forgives you, or do you still try to “earn” His love again?
What might help you walk in more consistent victory over sin?
Prayer:
Father, thank You that when I fall, You don’t reject me. Thank You for the blood of Jesus that covers every sin—past, present, and future. Help me to run to You in repentance and trust. Strengthen me to live in victory and keep growing in Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
